I've always been fascinated by the meanings of names. It is so much fun to look up someones name and see how the meaning and scriptures apply to them. Check out the names of the people from the lineage of Jesus ... their meanings put together tell a story!
Adam- Man
Seth- Appointed
Enosh- Mortal
Kenan- Sorrow
Mahalalel- The Blessed (God)
Jared- Shall come down
Enoch- Teaching
Methuselah- His death shall bring
Lamech- The despairing
Noah- Comfort and rest
(The God Files, Sy Rogers)
Isn't God is astounding? There are hidden treasures everywhere in His Word. I've recently begun to study the different names of God and Jesus. Wow, talk about a beautiful eye opening experience!
Here are some tidbits of my findings from Ann Spangler's books:
"To know God's name is to enjoy a kind of privileged access to him. By revealing his name, God made himself not only accessible but vulnerable. Not only could his people call on his name in prayer, they could dishonor it by living in ways that contradicted his character"
I love all His names, but so far these are my favorites:
El Roi -The God Who Sees Me "Lord, I praise you for you know the whole story. From beginning to end, you see it all. Give me the humility to admit my limitations. For I don't always see the past accurately, my vision of the present is often blurred, and I am blind when it comes to the future. Help me fasten my eyes on you, trusting in your vision for my life and in your watchful care."
Yahweh Nissi- The Lord My Banner Ancient banners were usually made out of wood and carried at the head of an army, or served as a rallying point for troops, or used as an announcement for victory. As you ponder the meaning of Yahweh Nissi, remember the cross. "In that day the Root of Jesse will stand as a banner for the peoples" -Isaiah 11 "Where, O death, is your victory? ... but thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ" -1 Corinthians 15
Immanuel- God With Us Yes, He was once a baby in a manger bearing the name Immanuel (that was the image I first thought of referring to this particular name). But He STILL is Immanuel, He STILL is God With Us. Matthew 28:20 "Surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age." What does that name say about Him?
Philippians 2:8-11
And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross. Therefore God also has highly exalted Him and given Him the name which is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those under the earth, and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
